Fenny edge away from drop zone

FENITON eased their relegation worries in D Division with a six- wicket win over Halberton — and they could yet finish the season in a top-four berth.

Victory puts the Acland Park men within 14 points of fourth spot, showing what back-toback wins can do in a congested table behind the runaway champions in waiting, Lewdown. Skipper John Chilcott top scored with 49 and Dale Barker (36) helped get Halberton up to 197 for eight.

Russell Whitton claimed four for 49 for Feniton, with two wickets each for Jon Pyle (2-22 in 10) and Stuart Bright (2-42).

The run chase was led by skippers past and present as current captain Mark Kingdon hit 42 and predecessor Graham Tucker an unbeaten 49.

Ade Pullin chipped in with 41 and Martin Swannell, the ex- Sidmouth, Paignton and South Devon batsman, struck 31.

Ottery St Mary picked up a sixth win of the season and retained an outside chance of promotion after a 67-run win at Tiverton.

The home side look as if they are locked in a two-way struggle to avoid joining Whitchurch in the E Division next season.

Phil Hubbard was the standout performer for Tiverton as he proved the most successful of the Mid Devon bowlers with two for 63 as the Otters posted 211 for six.

Hubbard then top scored with 37 in the Tiverton reply of 144.
